Truth from the Soul

Years ago we were bound and chained taken away our african names
we were taught their ways slaves are what we became

working in the fields everyday beaten if we made any mistakes
hanged was the punishment if we ran away

separated from our family on auction day

our tears unshed turned to fear and hate

women raped by masters at night
having kids whose skin was light

my ancestors lived during those times but I'm not just slave

I'm a savage to the name given to red skins who were here first

our land taken but we put up a fight being

forced on reservations taught to be civilized
to them we were wild believing the lies on the papers we signed

i am also part of the race believed to be superior to all

all we want are the broken promises we were denied long ago
peace among us all before it's to late
how much longer must we live in hate
