Humans are the only beasts we know
To have different cultures, languages and traditions
And while many are fascinated by the differences among them
I fall in love with the universals

Alegría, joie, vreugde, glæde
The word for joy changes when you cross boarders
But a smile is instantly recognized anywhere in the world
Laughter never has an accent

A wagging tail
A deep growl
A shrill shriek
A barbaric yawp

Certain things don't need translations
We all originated from the same terrain in Africa
If the Homo erectus could communicate without a language
We should be able to understand each other in spite of many

When words fail us
We go back to the universals
The language of beasts
We go back to our barbaric yawps
