Watching from above

I catch myself looking
back at time and self,
seeing how i was smiling
not just sitting on a shelf.

up on a shelf
i can see what’s happening,
learning from other’s mistakes
as well as the ones i own

i’ve been thinking things
i never thought before,
there’s definitely a reason
but what’s that reason for?

then one time at a party
as i was watching from above
i started laughing hysterically
at the friends i thought i loved.

for within the midst of laughter
the shelf gave way,
then i found myself, butt on the floor —
but a very cheap price to pay
for reality.
