What if

What if we were wrong,
Though we do not yet feel it?
What if opening that door
Made the room less lit?
What if we could turn back,
One of us,
And come back into the room,
And shut the door?
What if,
What if we could forgive,
Forgive and not just forget,
And desire nothing more?
No more the freedom,
For we have never lost it,
No more the beauty,
For having met, we found it.
No more,
No more the open door,
With all the bedlam,
That comes gaping into our secret little room.
Oh, stubborn hearts of ours!
Forgive and not just forget,
Love and do not fear,
As pure as of that time we met.
What if,
What if we were wrong?
