When I Had Wings

When I had wings
I soared above the clouds
Going higher and higher
Never looking down

When I had wings
I crossed hundreds of miles
I saw beautiful landscapes
Valleys and isles

When I had wings
I could fly freely and forever
I could do what I wanted
And go wherever

But they shot me out of the sky
And left me bleeding for days
They beat me and defeated me
Leaving me in a daze

When I finally came to
I saw what they had done
They took a knife to my wings
And now they were gone

I crumbled in agony
And mourned for what I had lost
It was almost as if my freedom
Had come at a terrible cost

But why I asked myself
Must I pay to be free
It’s unfair and it’s cruel
It’s reality
