When the Broad-Banded Sky

When the broad-banded sky
Is blurred by sleet's swift sweep,
My heart urges and I try
To lock within my speech
Unbeguiled beauty.
Then the quivering heart
Acts like my conscience' spy
Revealing some dark part
Half-hidden inside, aye,
Like a pearl in shadow:
Love lingers 'mongst the thorns.
