Where I’m From

I am from the dust storms,
from the hot, dry climate,
the cloudless nights.

I am from "go to church every Sunday"
And "go to catechism every Saturday"
with stern parents,
only wanting the best for their children.

I am from the gunshots late into the night,
sleeping on the roofs of our houses
to keep cool during the night
when there is no electricity

I am from the gated communities,
large houses and classy people,
lethal as they are classy
given the circumstances to survive.
