Why Do I Run?

It’s the fastest way to safety
when my heart loses
all control.
I trust my legs to do the work
when my thoughts wander too far
and all my hope in love is lost.
I chase my demons
because they know the way home,
I run and I run and I run.
I just want to be free,
I yell to them.
I taste blizzards and thunderstorms.
I’m crippled by the compulsion
of never feeling enough.
When I’m numb,
I run and I run.
Until my toes wither.
