Why I Lay Awake at Night

It's 2:39 a.m.,
and I can't go to sleep.
Just like the million
other nights before this one,
you are the only thing
that stands between me
and peaceful slumber.
Why must you live in my head?
You clutter my brain
like boxes in a storage room.
All I want to do is lay
down and not think about you
for one night.
Is that too much to ask for?
A night
where I don't see your beautiful
face illuminated by the moon.
A night
where I don't think about
your silhouette next to mine.
A night
where I don't hear you whisper,
"I love you,"
as you gently kiss me goodnight.
