Why Opposites Attract

When we're young and looking
for a life-long partner,
we think we want someone like us.

Someone to talk religion with,
Someone to eat spaghetti with,
someone to share our hobbies with.

But when we're older, less naíve,
we come to realize we want
someone not like us.

Someone to argue politics with,
someone to sample new cuisine with,
someone to broaden horizons with.

And why is it that we don't want our twins?
The same reason a battery has a positive and a negative,
or an atom isn't all electrons.

If a magnet were all negative, it would tire from negativity.
If a building only let people in, it would tire from popularity.
If my lover was all energy, I would tire from stimulation.
