Wide Awake Women of the World

I had a restless night last night
I looked toward the heavens for solace.
One bright star was in its usual place.

I wondered who else was
Gazing at this beacon in the sky.

Some lonely Afghan woman
On the run from the terrors of war
Looking at the star, like me.

An Afghan grandmother
Sitting in a tent on the border of Pakistan
Looking at the star, like me.

An Afghan mother nursing her baby,
Looking at the star, like me

A group of Afghan teenage girls
Huddled together for safety and comfort
Looking at the star, like me.

Women of the world standing watch!
Praying to live at peace with all mankind.
Bemoaning the darkness of time and space.
Looking at the star, like me.
