Winter

A hand reaches
and instead of raising you up
it razes all you knew,
It's a sign that it's time
to start again
and to begin the year anew

The crops are dead in barren fields
of sick and salt and snow
you pass right by and sneeze,
Tough in the middle
you harden your heart
and dress it in layers
so it doesn't freeze
