Without a Friend

I sit alone in this room of dark
And ponder within a broken heart
I did today like everyday
And smiled at those who passed my way
And as it neared its closing end
I chanced to meet a dearest friend
Hand stretched out for a sure embrace
When the door was slammed in my face
For no reason that I can tell,
Inside I heard, "Go to hell"
I started away in disbelief
Returned to knock, for some relief
Go away, don't bother me, I heard
And yet there was no spoken word
My heart cried, Why? What have I done?
My cries were vain for there was no one
Emptiness is loud! Too hard to bear
Room to room, but no one is there
Final chapter: the last page is read
No heartbeat, no more is said
