Words Will Never Hurt Me

We have a rule unspoken
To never speak.
And some rules are meant to be broken
But not this one", I say.
Some rules break you when you break them,
And I refuse to be broken again.
Yes, I am a coward.
It takes someone brave
And I'm full of fear.
So I'll wait
For you to initiate.
What if we're both cowards,
Patiently waiting for fear to dissolve?
And then my thoughts
Step on something even more terrifying--
"What if you've never loved me? What if you never will?"
I don't dare ask that question,
Because my mind knows the answer well
And my heart simply can't be broken,
Not again.
But I am beginning to realize
I'm already broken,
And you didn't have to lift a finger.
