Worse Things

I do not cry at funerals.

I cry when a movie
tugs at my heartstrings.
Or when a song hits
one special place and emotions cling
to a memory,
a place.

I will not cry at funerals.

I cry for stories of suffering,
loss, and injustice. To those headlines
asking, "What these crimes will bring?"
'Woman: Beaten, Raped and Killed' again...
For her voice.
Their words.

I can not cry at funerals.
Many people preach, "There are worse things"
than death, and moving on
There is hate, pain, and ignorance to suffering.
Cruelty is boundless.
Death? Final.

I do not cry at funerals.
