A case in point

Is it worth the money
to throw your suitcase
into the sea
in the name of anonymity?

Unashamed you walked
through the front door
but your feet did not touch
the tiles of the cold floor

Innocent but not guilty
you boldly proclaimed
in case it is upheld
against you all the same.

In any case
I am guilty of contempt
if I enter the casino
in my escape attempt.

Imagine my surprise
when I found a feather
wrapped in a dollar bill
in a suitcase made of leather.

All the riches of the poor
for the ones travelling light
convenient in a suitcase
when ready to take to flight.

This Poems Story

The poem relates to one of the lowest points in South African history. This occurred when the country was effectively sold for a dollar and a dime. The guilty parties of state capture were never brought to justice. Even today, the wealth that was accrued from corruption and illicit dealings at the highest level of government and economic institutions still walk free while the citizens of the country suffer.
