A place to play

Around the corner was this vacant lot
where all us kids would play,
others would come from around our block,
everyone was welcome to stay.

this open space was such a great spot,
where we played tag and ran around a lot.
we would fly our bird kites so very high,
they were almost unseen by our naked eyes.

sometimes we’d launch model rockets
and watched how high they got.
then we would try to track them down,
finding them, did we even have a shot?
as they gently floated down to the ground
some we found, others were not.
sometimes they would find their way
back down to our barren plot.
then as we were about to do one again,
our fun would suddenly stop,
for we’d hear our mothers calling us for dinner
time passed so quickly, that we forgot.

as summer passed, all the grass
grew so high that the land we couldn’t see,
except for the trails that were left behind
in the center was the place to be.

a small open space where we disappeared
where no one could see we were there.
we’d have our own secret club meetings
and do things we shouldn’t have dared,
but we always knew, the grass that grew
would eventually get mowed there.

so open or not how lot had become,
none of us seemed to care,
for we always had that place to play
no matter which landscape was there.
