Across The Prairie
Like a leg walk
I traverse the prairie
sea of shrubs sprawling beyond ...
In the blink of night and day,
day sees a field of grass,
none above a knee and a half
six footer. Leaves of grass,
from command of Galileo,
and of Newton, move back
and forth as the bob of Pendulum,
up down, up down, and a restart
aerial view stretching beyond.
Silence sings me s song
and when it is dead quiet
to hear a pin drop
it is the quietness of
graveyard hunt, field after field,
after field, ever widening view.
Is this quiet moment of
Aristotle and Ptolemy and
Archimedes, of Pythagoras
and Shakespeare, and of
scholars of ideas?
Idea hunt pricks my mind
this solemn hour. Muse hangs
in the air! Where are
isolated barren earth of
the prairie as are oases in
the deserts? Missouri, Kansas,
Colorado and New Mexico ...
come into view. Cities like
dots wrapped in sheets of
plant shrubs, birds fly and wander
unstopped by trees. Winds
drift aloft and roll and bounce
on apex of leaves, bathing
movers, no wedge stopping
them. Horizon's all bright
glow but falls back, recedes
to bleak dingy sky when dusts
raised traversing the great plains
fall under feet as I enter
domain of neighboring states.
