Does the sky see beauty in itself?

Does the sky see beauty in itself?
Does it know it never ends?
Or does it need to hear the words
Spoken from a friend?

Alone, it deepens from a blue
Down into a deeper hue
And, lonely, turns above our heads
Until it comes to light again

Does a rose that grows alone
Know its deepest red?
Or does it need another bloom
On which it can depend?

Alone, it muses on the thorns
Wonders whether passers scorn
To see a flower covered daggers
Unknowing if its heart is pure

Torn, we may not see ourselves
For all we come to be
Without the help of other tells
To see our filigree

This Poems Story

I thought of the main lines of this poem at 3AM, the worst hour to be awake. It started with "Does the sky see beauty in itself?" and "Can a rose grow alone?" I often feel like I can't see the best parts of myself. It is hard to see yourself in a proper light without the acceptance of friends and family. The theme of this poem comes from that low self-esteem that creeps in when you don't have the companionship to contrast poor self-image.
