Fingernails

Some say it’s from boredom
some say it’s nerves
some say it’s just a habit,
what do they serve?

the hardened dead skin
at the tips of my fingers
helps to scratch an itch,
also scrapes off that crust of blood
where the body’s trying to stitch.

then down to the quick
a nibble and bite
tugging and pulling the skin,
these urges become a fight.

for the enchantment
of a well groomed hand
is tipped with a shiny crown,
that shines a gleam
at the end of the digits,
manicured, pampered and proud.
