My Lungs
I’ll never be able to explain
how insanely difficult it was,
how much effort it took
to inhale oxygen into my lungs
those first few days.
I had to force myself to suck in air
and then force it into my lungs
and force them to operate manually.
The organs in my body,
designed to automatically run,
didn’t even want to function with you gone.
I didn’t even want to breathe
because oxygen kept me alive.
And being alive meant dealing with more pain,
more pain on top of the maximum amount
of pain I could withstand.
So those shallow breaths kept my heart beating,
or at least the part of it you left me.
I could never explain to anyone
how hard it was to breathe.
how insanely difficult it was,
how much effort it took
to inhale oxygen into my lungs
those first few days.
I had to force myself to suck in air
and then force it into my lungs
and force them to operate manually.
The organs in my body,
designed to automatically run,
didn’t even want to function with you gone.
I didn’t even want to breathe
because oxygen kept me alive.
And being alive meant dealing with more pain,
more pain on top of the maximum amount
of pain I could withstand.
So those shallow breaths kept my heart beating,
or at least the part of it you left me.
I could never explain to anyone
how hard it was to breathe.
