Starfall
You touched your forehead to mine,
I fell forward in time,
and witnessed what life could be like.
I saw us together,
making each other better,
every night for the rest of our lives.
My whole life played
inside of your eyes.
I'd watch everyday with a smile.
You had me entranced,
my heart in your hands,
the Stars shined on by the mile.
So happily distracted,
we lovingly redacted
the signs that we were not perfect.
We'd walk through the dark
fearlessly, arm-in-arm.
The view made everything worth it.
We'd live out our days
so deeply in love,
there wasn't an end in sight.
You felt just like home,
but I should have known
our fire was burning too bright.
Now, as I walk
through the darkness of night,
when the air is quiet and still,
I notice the absence
of twinkling light;
the Stars with which skies were once filled.
How did I miss
this encroaching abyss?
Did the Stars fall one-by-one?
So gradual a change,
each day felt the same,
'til the eventual course had been run?
Tell me where it was
we went so wrong.
Were our hearts simply lost in a song?
Did we play it one day
and forget all the notes?
Or tire of the same for so long?
We've never been further
gone from one another.
I wish we could turn back the time,
and return to the days
and nights when we'd lay
and gaze upon beautiful skies.
I wonder one night,
if I follow the Stars,
will I find my way back to your heart?
Or perhaps in their absence,
in shadowing gloom,
I'll walk off the Earth, ever chasing your tune.
