The African Girl (La Fille Africaine)

Look at me, Ma
They said my hair is too kinky
So they put a razor to my strands
Ma, they shaved away my beauty
Look at me, Ma
They said not to be so skinny
But they don't like too much flesh either
Ma, what then should I be?
Look at me, Ma
They said to be strong because I carry future babies
But whenever I stand up to speak
They tell me to be quiet like a lady
But Ma, look at me
Can't I be a lady as well as a king?
Can't I fight alongside all the knights defending rights
Ma, my skin is dark and my heart is full of light
Ma, I want to be strong like Pa, my fallen knight
So look once again, Ma
Because I am beautiful just like my continent
Ma I am telling you, I am strong and radiate confidence
They may look down on my dreams and existence
But I am The African Girl (la fille africaine)
And while they were too busy looking down
The stars were revealing to me my destiny
And Ma, I am going out to grab it
