Where We First Met

By aokjr

I passed where we first met
Beneath the dead lamppost
At the end of Heartbreak County
A place of mixed feelings
Where we watched love's onset
As well as our young sun set
I expected it to be empty

But a house stood in its place
A woman was by the window sill
Tending her lilies in bloom
A man walked up behind her
Wrapped his arms around her
And softly kissed her on the neck
I could see them giggling
The color in the woman's face
The bulge of her tummy
The pride in the man's eyes
A rembrandt of a memory that was mine

I stood there for a long while
Transfixed, lost in thoughts
Bitter pools into sweet streams
Tears flowed freely
Pain mingled with relief
There was no trace of us
Someone built a home
On our pile of ashes.
