WHY!

By Mel B

When you walked away,
words like knives,
cutting the air between us,
your back turned, a wall raised high.
You said I was too much, too needy,
like a vine wrapped around your heart,
suffocating the light,
ingrained in your shadow.

From the start, I held on tight,
my heart a tether, the kind
that turned every "I love you"
into whispers under the night sky.
But you needed space,
a vast emptiness
where I used to fit,
while I stood there,
a buoy tossed in the waves of your doubt.

You said we couldn't be friends anymore,
as if love’s echoes could vanish,
like smoke drifting from a fire,
leaving just the cold bones
of what we built.
I wanted to ask,
was it all just a game?
Were those sweet nothings
only hollow shells?

But when I pressed,
your silence spoke louder,
each word unsaid weighed heavy,
and you wouldn’t put it like that.
Instead, you fumbled in the dark,
claiming you didn’t know how to end it,
as if it were a puzzle, pieces scrambling
across where we used to stand.

Yet here I sat, broken,
wondering if love’s warmth
was just a mirage,
a trick of the light
that vanished on your last breath.
You only offered an echo,
the aftermath of dreams crushed,
with no promise of tomorrow,
leaving me to chase shadows
in the silence you left behind.

So here’s to the lessons,
to love and loss,
to the hurt wrapped tightly in my chest,
where I learned the dark truth:
sometimes, the heart is a lonely place,
and after all the goodbyes,
I’m left picking up the pieces,
like autumn leaves, scattered,
as the wind whispers
the names of those
who no longer want to stay.
