Segregated headstones
Married in 1842
When we said the words “I do”
Divided by both of our religions
We didn’t care for our indifference
We lived together and our lives we shared
An unlikely love
A love very rare
You passed first and I was last
And it wasn’t long before I too passed
Religions split us apart in the grave
So, we joined hands together safe
Over the wall and hidden from view
As close as I could get to you
When we said the words “I do”
Divided by both of our religions
We didn’t care for our indifference
We lived together and our lives we shared
An unlikely love
A love very rare
You passed first and I was last
And it wasn’t long before I too passed
Religions split us apart in the grave
So, we joined hands together safe
Over the wall and hidden from view
As close as I could get to you

This Poems Story
I was touched by a story about a couple who were married during the 1800\\\'s, even though they had religious differences. They were married happily for many decades until the husband passed away and not long after, the wife. It was law then that different religions couldn\\\'t be buried together, so the wife made a compromise before her death that she should be buried over the wall the divided the two graveyards, and their tombstones clasped hands.
