Cautionary Tale
I really am ok now,
But your presence
Stirred in me
The bitter memories,
That cannot be seen,
But through my mind,
As I relive
A past and a people
That took so long to forgive.
Had your own struggles
Not been the same
As that of my family's-
And their shame-
I would not now be fighting
To hold back tears
As I recall those terrible years.
I do not think of it often,
Except for God's great grace
In the midst of the pain.
It is to me now a caution,
A tale of what became
Of those whose struggles
Were all in vain,
A tale of those
Who loved their flesh,
And in doing so,
Welcomed eternal death.
But your presence
Stirred in me
The bitter memories,
That cannot be seen,
But through my mind,
As I relive
A past and a people
That took so long to forgive.
Had your own struggles
Not been the same
As that of my family's-
And their shame-
I would not now be fighting
To hold back tears
As I recall those terrible years.
I do not think of it often,
Except for God's great grace
In the midst of the pain.
It is to me now a caution,
A tale of what became
Of those whose struggles
Were all in vain,
A tale of those
Who loved their flesh,
And in doing so,
Welcomed eternal death.

This Poems Story
After meeting someone and getting to know more about their history- all in a short period of time- some old feelings and memories of my own past were brought to the surface. While this individual was great to get to know, I could not bring myself to further my own acquaintance with them. He was very obviously still dealing with some hard sin struggles that honestly made me ill at ease despite hearing of the Lord\'s gracious hand toward him. My own family history made me anxious of the entire situation in a way that had not triggered me before. It altogether made me more aware of what I consider to be warning signs, hence the poem \"Cautionary Tale\".
