Father of Fear

The wind whips the windows and howels in fury.

I'm making plans to get out of this house in a hurry

I can't leave my sister, and there is no where to go

The feelings of anxiety have reached a plateau.

I lock the door, and run to the kitchen.

I grabbed a knife and lost all ambition.

I curled in the corner while the thunder cackled.

Fear permanently plastered on my face, as though it had been spackled.

Four hours to go, and no end in sight.

I didn't know if we would make it through this night.

The words manhunt thrown around the next day on the news,

But I had lost all hope of understanding these social cues.

The school counselor says that this isn't normal.

She said those words with such a sting, like she thought I was immortal.

I know he is a horrible person, but what does that have to do with me?

I'm coping the best I can, just leave me be.

This Poems Story

This poem is about how I felt when my father had kidnapped his ex girlfriend, and there was a manhunt for them. I got a call from my aunt who asked if my mom was home. She wasn\'t going to be home until 12am, because she worked the 2nd shift at a hospital. I was only 16, and I was babysitting my 5 year old sister with ASD. My aunt had told me to lock the doors because he might come for me too. I ended up needing a police escort and had mandatory school counseling. I didn\'t connect with my counselor and all the coping I had been doing fell apart with her words. I spiraled into a depression until he was caught.
