Memory fades
You don’t know my name, you think I’m someone I’m not
We sing and dance to escape the disease, you remember everything you forgot.
Your memories are locked in a cold jail cell, dancing is the only bail.
Your memory fades but your heart does not. I’ll wait here with you, it really means a lot.
You sit on your chair with fear and do not know why, you look at me with confusion and a tear in your eye.
If this is the last time I will understand, I’ll keep you company so please hold my hand.

This poem was inspired when I worked in the memory unit in a nursing home. Most were struggling with Dementia and Alzheimer’s. There was a resident who was always scared, but when I held her hand, went to church, and danced with her she was calm. Memory is a devastating thing to lose, but watching someone lose it is just as heart breaking.
