Miss Understood
She came to New York City
All the way from Mississippi
She walked though that door
She got her heel stuck in the floor
Then she wrote on the chalk board
My name is Miss Underwood
But it didn’t take long before
She became Miss Understood
Because she had this deep southern drawl
So whenever she spoke
It sounded like she was telling a joke
But all she ever wanted
Was to be understood
But nobody ever could
Which is how she got the name
Miss Understood
And she always wore
These bright colored dresses
Everybody started wearing sunglasses
And just when I thought
It couldn’t get any worse
She told us how she loved to eat
Pickled beets and pig’s feet
And when she said that one day
She was gonna become a preacher
Everybody laughed at her
But all she ever wanted
Was to be understood
But nobody ever could
Which is how she got the name
Miss Understood
So maybe she was just a little crazy
But she was one heck of a nice lady
She always put a smile on our face
Even though we made her feel out of place
We made her feel like she didn’t belong
We made her feel like she did something wrong
But she never asked us to be
Somebody we didn’t want to be
She just accepted us for who we were
So why couldn’t somebody do the same for her
Because all she ever wanted
Was to be understood
But nobody ever could
Which is how she got the name
Miss Understood
But little did she know
She became my hero
Because She never let the doubters get her down
She never let the haters change her ways
She just kept on dreaming
Kept on believing
And then one day there it was
Sittin up on a shelf
Number one best seller
From a teacher to a preacher
She always wanted to be understood
But she showed me that it’s ok
If nobody ever could
Because she is the one who taught me
How not to let a name define who I am
As long as I keep on dreaming
Keep on believing
I can be anything I want to be
And I owe it all to her
My favorite teacher
