Red Doesn't Win
The color was prominent in their lives from the beginning. It was there when they had a picnic
Among the cornflowers.
Ham sandwiches melted into their taste buds,
As they gazed lovingly at each other.
They looked at one another like there wasn't anyone else in the universe.
It was there when they danced
Next to the grand oak tree.
Their hands coated in it as they made a heart
With their initials in the center.
It was there as they swayed to music being pumped through
The old stereo and kissed for the first time.
It Shined through on their day,
Her choice of having the cornflower petals
Cast out of the flower girl’s hand.
His choice of having the beautiful cornflowers as their centerpieces
On the dance floor,
As he spun her around,
After she had changed from traditional white.
Her dress bellowed out beneath her,
As she moved as graceful as a ballerina.
Soft deep ocean color of the sheets,
When they made love for the first time.
Their passion fiery against the vibrant hydrangeas.
The color of the sky,
The week after as the widow
Stood next to a grave.
Everything was too bright and cheery,
Not matching her mood at all.
The sun beat down on her as
She held her baby boy in her arms.
The color of his blanket as he cried.
She knew her baby would never know his father,
But she liked to think he was mourning him anyways.
