The Tether’s Break
I have nightmares with my eyes wide open.
I wake already shivering, covered in cold...
not from fear,
but from recognition.
I cannot move.
I am bound to this chair,
and my own screams refuse to leave me.
They echo in the ribs,
they settle in the throat,
they make a home behind the eyes.
I asked no one....
when does torment stop calling itself life?
When does suffering loosen its grip
and allow one moment of peace?
It was moving closer now.
First, the stench...
something ancient and rotting,
the smell of memory left too long in the dark.
It crept toward me
with every shift of silence.
Then I heard it.
At first, distant...
a scream misplaced somewhere beyond the walls.
Thin. Almost human.
Easy to deny.
Then it grew.
Not louder
closer.
A crescendo without mercy.
A cacophony that defied the architecture of the room,
An unholy pandemonium
that refused to lower even one octave.
It did not sound like many voices.
It sounded like one thing
wearing many mouths.
And it was mine.
The closer it came,
the warmer the room became.
Heat crawled from every corner
and entered through every opening
mouth, lungs, ears, eyes
until my body no longer felt inhabited,
only occupied.
My soul was leaving.
I felt it
the way a prisoner feels the first broken chain.
The wood of the chair hummed against my spine.
A sympathetic resonance that made us one single, screaming object.
The physical tether
whatever cruel thread keeps spirit tied to flesh
had begun to fray.
Then I understood.
Cymatics.
Resonance.
Frequency as execution.
At twenty kilohertz,
the sound no longer needed the ear.
It entered through structure.
Bone received it first.
The marrow answered.
My teeth vibrated like glass.
The hair along my body lifted
as if trying to escape before I could.
My skeleton became an instrument
played by something merciless.
The pressure increased.
Bone conducted the violence.
Lungs folded inward
under invisible embolisms of air.
Cells twisted.
Free radicals multiplied like a rot in the code and my
Blood forgot its purpose.
Organs surrendered in sequence.
I could feel my mind softening
not pain,
but erasure.
Thought became slurry.
Memory became heat.
Identity became noise.
And still,
the sound grew.
Not to kill.
To unmake.
To strip the name from the soul
and leave only the raw animal of existence
shaking,
kneeling,
waiting
for permission to end.
When the tether finally broke,
there was no light.
No peace.
No revelation.
Only silence.
And the terrible understanding
that the body survived.
I did not.
I wake already shivering, covered in cold...
not from fear,
but from recognition.
I cannot move.
