Wallpaper & Paint

The wallpaper is peeling, the paint is scratched
A beautiful structure with broken glass
Dusty furniture, roses withered into ash
A dining table where no one sits
Memories fading like dying wicks
The gutters overflowing with the rain
Backyard weeds grow wild again
A dusty sofa, treasures lost
A static-filled television, its music long lost
The curtains dropped to the floor
The doorknobs no longer on the door
The storage room sat, untouched
A gentle turn at the hallway's bend
A corner stacked with wallpaper and paint
The thunder rumbles, the lightning strikes
Rain sweeps in and washes out the light
'Til only my soul remains behind
So, feeling empty, I grab the rolls
Of wallpaper and buckets of paint
And cover up any imperfections that have stained
I can start my house anew
And leave any memories of you
I'll buy a new carpet, replace the glass
But I don't want to rush too fast
For the mess in me will always stay
And I can no longer wish for brighter days
