When You Know

What will you think, how will you feel
when you realize this going is real?

What will you say in dark of night
when you see I've left the fight?

How can you settle up the score --
when I don't care anymore?

What will the days and nights be in this true --
in my really leaving you?

Though you left, broke us apart --
you closed your mind, shut tight your heart,

Yet in leaving you held hope still --
that you could bend me to your will

And drip by drip the silent days --
says I left in bigger ways.

Soon you'll know that I will be,
better off being free.

In the drip by drip of life --
of every joy and every strife,

You'll see we don't need the other --
you'll see I am not a substitute mother!

If this sort of letting go --
isn't what you hoped to know,

Learn from this and going new --
Give more, take less than you take for you.

That's the way to keep a friend,
and have something never end.

In the end I had to go
sorry of the knowledge of you I even know!
or thinking I know, but it wasn't so.

If you think you are a friend,
not to me, so have an end.

If you think I want you near,
or your voice inside my ear,

Think again! I want you lost --
in the mix of my happy life, you are too high a cost.

What will our lives be now we are nothing at all
whatever they will be , large or small

It really matters not at flea --
for you were never there for me.

What have I lost, not much you see
But you, you idiot, have lost me!

Take heart from the last time I went away --
30 years we were fine day by day.

And so again I step away --
and leave us peace 30 years away I'll stay.

What will you think, how will you feel --
when you realize this going is real?

Here's what I'll do and you should too--
get to the place where you really feel... "you, WHO?"

The day will come when you are gone, out of sight and heart and mind
and then to me, life will be kind.

What have I lost, not much you see
But you, you idiot, have lost me!
