With You Went The Warm
Summer mornings, I sit on the balcony with mom.
She smokes her cigarette, I think of you.
How you would lay beside us.
Your brown eyes darting as the birds flew by.
The winter has long been gone, and with you it went.
The summer mornings make me blue,
Since the cold took you.
They came to pick up your body.
The room was muted, hollow, and silent.
I slept beside your body, hoping it was all in my head.
I ran to hug you one last time.
And I tried to hold on oh so tight.
I promised you I'd never leave your side.
"Can't they take me too?" I cried.
"Throw me into the fire with you."
Now the summer mornings feel so cold,
Because with you went the warm.
Mom finishes her cigarette, puts out the smoke.
She walks inside shutting the door.
Now I am all alone.
Oh Harley,
With you went the warm.
This Poems Story
This poem is for my dog Harley who passed away in March. She saved my life. I think I needed her more than she needed me. She would lay on the floor next to me when I\'d write my other poems, now my room feels so empty without her. I love you Harley. Artwork - Pinterest: Natalija Grustiene
