A Vow Turned to Stone

The only vow you upheld was "till death do us part,"
and with it, you orchestrated a slow murder of her spirit.
One page at a time, you wrote her demise,
like a frog in a pot of water, gradually warming.
Your narcissism, a subtle poison, increased by fractions each day,
until her mind, bewildered, could no longer discern reality
from your self-serving narrative.

No longer vibrant and green,
her mind withered from the ceaseless battle within.
Deep down, she knew you were wrong,
but she shielded you from the harsh judgments of others.
She crafted stories, spun lies to friends and family,
about the goodness she believed you embodied.
She deceived herself so thoroughly
that she began to believe her own fabrications.

Now, a cautionary yellow pervades her world,
a wary hue born from the pain of her unheeded truth.
In the remnants of her once-innocent hope,
a stark reminder lingers—
the love she clung to, the vow she honored,
left her with a soul tainted,
cracked by the very promises that should have protected her.

This Poems Story

The poem tells the story of a woman trapped in an emotionally abusive marriage. She entered the relationship with a vow of lifelong commitment, but her husband slowly undermined her self-worth and sense of reality through his selfish behavior. She became so consumed by protecting his image that she lost touch with her own truth and began to believe her own lies. In the end, she’s left with a deep sense of regret and sorrow, as the promises she made to love and honor him have instead left her emotionally scarred. The \"cautionary yellow\" in the poem represents the painful lessons she learned too late about the true nature of her relationship.
