But I Remember You
You spoke with such grace
no longer have that poise,
the expressions that wore your face
to drown out yesterday’s noise.
Sharp knife of a wit
to cut a simple man down
Your light still brightly lit,
Still king who wears a different crown.
You can’t move like Jagger
but you still catch the beat,
You have a different kind of swagger,
A contrasting shuffle to your feet.
Gated in your stance
Divergence in your walk
You march to a new dance,
no longer swayed to the shock.
Brain upgraded to a new wave
You changed overnight,
Laid our memories to your living grave
Flowers to your weary plight.
Relearn your style
as you had to assimilate
You fought with such denial,
Your heart and soul learned to
accomodate.
I recall our wedding smile
Every footstep down the aisle
The ring no longer fits your hand,
Divorcing comforts a state-of-the-art man.
Still by your side
Something old, something new;
You may not remember all of me,
But I remember You.
no longer have that poise,
the expressions that wore your face
to drown out yesterday’s noise.
Sharp knife of a wit
to cut a simple man down
Your light still brightly lit,
Still king who wears a different crown.
You can’t move like Jagger
but you still catch the beat,
You have a different kind of swagger,
A contrasting shuffle to your feet.
Gated in your stance
Divergence in your walk
You march to a new dance,
no longer swayed to the shock.
Brain upgraded to a new wave
You changed overnight,
Laid our memories to your living grave
Flowers to your weary plight.
Relearn your style
as you had to assimilate
You fought with such denial,
Your heart and soul learned to
accomodate.
I recall our wedding smile
Every footstep down the aisle
The ring no longer fits your hand,
Divorcing comforts a state-of-the-art man.
Still by your side
Something old, something new;
You may not remember all of me,
But I remember You.

This was inspired by my ex husband’s cognitive brain damage. He changed and no longer wanted to be married but still check in on him.
