Grief is

The glassy clear water
in fall,
just before the lake freezes.

The chill cold to the bones,
but eerily serene.

Leaves falling from the trees,
leaving bare bark
brushed with snowy speckles.

Clouds darken damp doorsteps,
with shades drawn shut
and furnaces fuming.

But the aroma arouses suspicion,
for it does not smell
of bark blazing
or furnaces fuming,

it smells of salty swaps,
metallic misery,
and incense.

It feels like a puzzle
with a broken
last
piece.

For grief is not
the constant thought of the loss,
but the remembrance
that something is missing.

And life is different
because of that broken
last
piece.
