I\'ll Help You Cross

A busily bunched city street
full of blinkers and beepers
bumper-to-bumper,
all huddled and haggard,
waiting for the light to change.

A little girl waits next to her mother
on the stubby street corner,
pungently packed with people.

She tugs at her mother's trench
to pull her attention away
from the blinking box
and busy bodies around them.

In response,
the mothers hand darts out
to hook a chubby digit
into her palm,
clasped tight.

They walk,
as the little girl happily hops
from one white block
to the next.

Her mother taking the brunt
of every brutish shove
the passerby pushes
onto her.

When they reach the other side
the little girl looks up in joyful glee,
with a gappy grin,

and the mother laughs
in return.
