Save it for a rainy day

Whenever I'd come over,
you'd give me 50 cents.
Your careworn palms
meeting mine with
change pressed between.

You'd tell me to save it
for a rainy day,
a day I felt I needed
your kindness, warmth, and love.

You'd make me feel special
with that little bit of pocket change,
jingling in my floral purse
that was too big to
sling over my shoulder.

No matter how old I got,
or what purse I brought,
you'd always greet me
with an open palm
and 50 cents.

Now I stand before you,
open palm,
with 50 cents of my own.
I leave it on the polished stone
where you rest,
eternally,
with the last pair
of quarters
you gave me.

I guess I saved it for a rainy day.

I love this. It reminded me of my grandfather. Beautifully written.
